Malignant Tumors: Metastatic

Metastatic tumors arise from primary tumors outside the liver but spread throughout the body by the way of the bloodstream, including into the liver. On occasion, the liver can be the first site used to identify either a primary or metastatic tumor. The pathologist uses histologic features and immunohistochemistry (IHC) to aid in the differentiation of primary tumors from metastatic tumors.
