Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a condition that demonstrates histologic characteristics similar to those of alcoholic liver disease in an individual who does not consume alcohol. Liver biopsy characteristics of NASH are fatty changes, hepatocellular necrosis, the presence of Mallory hyaline, and sometimes fibrosis. The quantity and patterns of these characteristics histologically allow pathologists to distinguish alcoholic liver disease from NASH in correlation with a history of alcohol consumption. NASH is most commonly observed in diabetic patients who are overweight.
