Case B

A 14-year-old patient sees the pediatrician because of fatigue, weight loss, increased appetite, thirst, and frequent urination. There is a family history of diabetes.
Laboratory Testing:
Fasting plasma glucose (FPG) = 250 mg/dL (reference interval 75–100 mg/dL)
Serum ketones = Positive, 1+ (reference interval = Negative)
One week later:
Repeat FPG = 170 mg/dL (reference interval 75–100 mg/dL)
