Diabetes may be caused by conditions other than absolute insulin deficiency, decreased insulin, or impaired insulin activity. Specific types of diabetes due to other causes may include:
- Monogenic diabetes syndromes: Examples include neonatal diabetes and maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY)
- Diseases of the exocrine pancreas: Examples include cystic fibrosis
- Drug- or chemical-induced diabetes: Examples include the treatment of HIV/AIDS or post-organ transplantation
Because of the other hormones that regulate glucose concentration, increased glucagon, cortisol, and epinephrine will cause hyperglycemia. Genetic defects in beta cell function and insulin action, and other diseases of the pancreas, result in diabetes.
