Responding to an Active Shooter Incident

60 seconds of inaction can cost 2.5 lives. If you find yourself in an active shooter incident, it's important that you know how to respond, and to respond fast. This course will describe the "Run, Hide, Fight" method.
"Run, Hide, Fight" was created by Ready Houston, OSHA, the City of Houston, and the Department of Homeland Security to prepare individuals for active shooter events. In 2012, they developed the Run, Hide, Fight video that is frequently included in active shooter preparedness courses (Trigger warning: this video contains explicit content of an active shooter shooting people with a gun. Please watch at your own level of comfort).
Other methods include:
  • “Avoid, Deny, Defend,” which was developed by the ALERRT center at Texas State University
  • "ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate)," which was developed by Navigate 360
  • "STAAAT (Situational Threat Awareness, Assessment, and Action Training)," which was developed by Security Advisors Consulting Group
While there are differing viewpoints on the effectiveness of these methods, "Run, Hide, Fight" is the most common method taught in active shooter courses. Please follow your facility's policies and procedures for which method is appropriate for you.
