Chemicals, especially alkalis and acids, if splashed into the eye can cause serious damage within 1 to 5 minutes. It is essential to remove the offending agent as soon as possible.
If a person has obtained a chemical burn in their eye(s), a rescuer should make sure the victim keeps their affected eye(s) open using their fingers and flush them with water for at least 15 minutes. Using an eyewash station is the most effective treatment. Otherwise, they should use a safety shower or water from the sink.
The rescuer can assist the victim by supporting their head so water flows across the eyeball from the inside corner of the eye (nearest the nose), outward.
Once the victim can continue flushing on their own, the rescuer should call 9-1-1 or the designated emergency contact for immediate medical assistance.
