Angina is severe pain in the chest caused by insufficient blood supply to the heart. It can often spread to the shoulders, arms, and neck. It can occur after intense activity and typically lasts a few minutes.
If a person is experiencing angina, the rescuer should ask if the victim has been diagnosed with angina and if the pain is like angina pain experienced in the past. If so, the rescuer should help the victim take their medication and advise them to rest. If the pain (a) persists for more than 10 minutes, or (b) stops and then returns, the rescuer should call 9-1-1 or the designated emergency contact.
If a person is experiencing a heart attack, the rescuer should call 9-1-1 or the designated emergency contact. The rescuer should ask the victim if they are taking heart medication and help obtain the medication. They should follow the directions on the medication but do not let the victim eat or drink anything (including water). They should place the victim in a comfortable position and attend to them until emergency services arrive.
