Asthma Attacks

An asthma attack may occur if a person is exposed to noxious chemical fumes, suffers an anxiety attack, or experiences other triggers. An asthma attack is characterized by:
  • Wheezing and difficulty breathing and speaking
  • Dry persistent cough
  • Fear or anxiety
  • Gray-blue or ashen skin
  • Changing levels of responsiveness
If a person is having an asthma attack, a rescuer should determine if this is the victim's first attack. If so, they should call 9-1-1 or the designated emergency contact immediately. If it is not the victim's first attack and they have medication, the victim will use their inhaler. To operate an inhaler:
  1. Remove the cap.
  2. Shake the inhaler several times.
  3. Connect the spacer (the tube), if needed.
  4. Help place the inhaler end in the victim's mouth.
  5. Press the applicator down while the victim slowly inhales.
  6. Remind the victim to hold their breath with the medication for about 10 seconds.
