Each cycle consists of 5 back blows and 5 abdominal thrusts.
Back blows involve the rescuer standing behind and to the side of the victim, wrapping one arm diagonally across the victim's chest, bending the victim at the waist, and striking the victim between the shoulder blades with the heel of their hand.
Abdominal thrusts involve standing behind the victim, wrapping their arms around the victim's waist, making a fist with one hand and grabbing it with the other, placing the thumb side of the fist against the middle of the victim's abdomen (slightly above the navel and well below ribs and breastbone), and pressing the fist in quick, upward thrusts.
