Exercise 1: Communications Fan-Out

Preparation
Assign an observer and individuals who would be present and contacted if an emergency event occurred after 10 PM.
The individuals participating in the exercise should focus on following the procedures in place for the corresponding event and should consider:
  • Staff and patient safety
  • Communication
  • Equipment
  • Personnel
  • Utilities
  • Initial response
Scenario
It is 10:30 PM and the facility is having an after-hours test of its fan-out lists:
  1. At 10:31 PM, the laboratory is notified by overhead paging of a fan-out list test.
  2. At 10:40 PM, the laboratory administrator decides to expand the drill to all laboratories and all staff.
  3. At 11:05 PM, there is an all clear.
Note: allow participants to react to each individual event in the scenario before moving to another event.
Follow-Up and Recommendations
  • Were all operating sections of the laboratory contacted?
  • Were the leaders of all laboratories notified?
  • Did all of the section fan-out lists work?
  • Depending on the event, would enough staff be able to come in quickly enough to handle the workload? If not, what do you do?
