Exercise 7: Blood Bank Emergency Release

Preparation
Assign an observer and individuals that would be present at the time of the event or who would be contacted during the event.
The individuals participating in the event should focus on following procedures in place for such an event and should consider:
  • Staff and patient safety
  • Communication
  • Equipment
  • Personnel
  • Utilities
Scenario
It is 2:00 PM in a 100-bed hospital that does not have an emergency room.
  1. A nurse calls at 2:05 PM, saying that they need blood as soon as possible for a bleeding patient.
  2. At 2:30 PM, the same nurse calls and asks for two units of red blood cells stat.
  3. At 2:40 PM, the nurse calls again asking for emergency release of red cells.
Note: allow participants to react to each individual event in the scenario before moving to another event.
