The level of involvement will determine the participant roles needed. However, each exercise needs:
- A coordinator who provides the participants with the information as the event unfolds.
- One or more observers who record decisions and personnel interactions.
- Representatives from areas where decisions need to be made, including security, maintenance, administrators, laboratory directors, and front-line staff.
Staff will need orientation to inform them what is expected. You may want to provide staff with a reminder sheet during an exercise to consider:
- What are the policies and procedures we have in place for this emergency event?
- What needs to be done?
- Who should be notified?
- What effect does this emergency event have on:
- specimen collection?
- testing?
- personnel?
- equipment?
- utilities?
- supplies and reagents?
