Disinfectants, Decontamination and Sterilization (continued)

The EPA does not routinely review the safety or efficacy of pesticidal devices, such as UV lights, LED lights, or ultrasonic devices. When disinfectants are registered with the EPA, they will be grouped according to the product label claims and will be categorized as “limited,” “general,” or “hospital” grade disinfection.
The EPA “List N” provides a list of currently approved disinfectants which can be effectively used against SARS-CoV-2. Staff can use EPA List N to determine the most appropriate registered hospital disinfectant for the surface or object in question. Staff should check the label for effectiveness against respiratory viral pathogens, and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for use.
For all disinfectants, the EPA recommends 6 key steps:
1. Check if the product is EPA-approved.
2. Follow the manufacturer directions for use, including use on certain surface types.
3. Pre-clean the surface with soap and water.
4. Follow the contact time instructions, and keep the surface wet the whole time to ensure the product will be effective.
5. Wear gloves and wash hands when complete.
6. Store disinfectants properly.
