Laboratory Testing

Before SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 testing begins, laboratories that are CLIA-certified and able to perform testing should consider:
  • Performing a site-specific and activity-specific risk assessment to identify and mitigate safety risks.
  • Training on properly using testing-related instrument(s) and equipment, including decontaminating after use with an appropriate disinfectant.
  • Using testing instrument(s), including point-of-care tests, in a location associated with a current CLIA certificate.
  • Training for ways to minimize the risk of exposures and how to follow response plans if there is a potential exposure event.
  • Training staff on standard precautions when handling clinical specimens, including hand hygiene, the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), or any additional precautions determined by the laboratory’s risk assessment.
The CDC provides COVID-19-specific testing guidelines, which are available here.
