COVID-19 was initially known as “2019 novel coronavirus” or “2019-nCoV” before being officially named “COVID-19” by the World Health Organization (WHO). The virus was taxonomically named “SARS-CoV-2” by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) in February 2020.
