COVID-19 was initially known as “2019 novel coronavirus” or “2019-nCoV” before being officially named “COVID-19” by the World Health Organization (WHO). In February 2020, the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) taxonomically named the virus “SARS-CoV-2.”
