Commercial Digital Imaging Systems

There are currently several commercially available digital pathology systems for capturing, saving, and including gross digital images in the official pathology report:
These systems come with washable stands, zoom lenses, light sources, HD cameras, autofocus, touch screens, hands-free foot pedals, teleconference software, motorized lens, foot switch control, barcode input, on-screen image preview and image editing, on-screen annotation sample and section labeling, video capture, and audio capture.
The systems provide easy transfer to the laboratory information system, remove the need for de-gloving, and calibrate image capturing for length measurement. Since they can be remotely controlled, the systems also allow for telepathology.
Commercial digital imaging systems typically come in three different set-up options:
  • Free-standing macro stations
  • Mobile stations
  • Wall mount stations, or mount stations directly on the grossing station
