Social Awareness

The third concept of emotional intelligence is social awareness.
Instead of self-awareness, which is recognizing your emotions and behavior, social awareness is the recognition of others' emotions and behaviors, as well as their perspectives and needs. It involves the ability to recognize the non-verbal communication cues of others and to engage with interest rather than judgement. It also involves awareness and understanding of the emotions and dynamic relationships of a group. It is important to remember that you can only control your behavior, not the behavior of others.
One of the key competencies of social awareness, as cited by Daniel Goleman, is empathy.
