Spherocytes are red cells with a decreased surface-to-volume ratio. As a result, they are denser than normal red cells. On a Wright stained smear in the proper viewing area, they appear to be round, darkly stained cells without central pallor. The arrows indicate two spherocytes on this peripheral blood smear image.
