Another Example of Macrocytosis

This peripheral blood smear is from a patient with vitamin B12 deficiency anemia (pernicious anemia), which results from an inability to absorb the vitamin B12 needed for DNA synthesis. Since many cells are destroyed in the bone marrow, decreased numbers of red cells are present in the circulating blood, resulting in anemia. The red cells that are present are generally macrocytes.
