Questions #33 and 34: HIV

YesNo
Have you EVER
33. Had a positive test for HIV infection?
34. Taken any medication to treat HIV infection?
Donors who have had a confirmed positive test for HIV are permanently deferred.
Donors who have ever taken medication to treat HIV are also permanently deferred. Antiretroviral medications used to treat HIV are effective in reducing the viral load in an infected person, to the point where laboratory testing may not detect the virus, but the medications do not fully eliminate HIV from the body. The guideline of "undetectable equals untransmittable" for HIV applies to sexual transmission, and transmission via transfusion products is still possible even with an undetectable viral load.
