Jones' Methenamine Silver Stain: Diagnostic Applications

The Jones' Methenamine Silver Stain (JMS) demonstrates glomerular basement membranes in kidney sections. Basement membranes are a type of connective tissue that epithelial cells rest upon. In the kidney, glomerular basement membranes serve as filters. Thickened glomerular basement membranes are often a sign of kidney disease and diabetes. These membranes are significantly challenging to distinguish with H&E staining.
