Question #29: Double Red Donation

YesNo
In the past 16 weeks, have you
29. Donated a double unit of red blood cells using an apheresis machine?
The deferral time following a double red (apheresis) donation is 16 weeks. Donors participating in double RBC apheresis programs are also deferred for 16 weeks from platelet or plasma apheresis donation programs.
There are additional requirements for qualifying to participate in a double red donation program, as set by the apheresis machine manufacturer. The standard of care indicates that a person should lose no more than 15% of their total blood volume in a single donation. Total blood volume is calculated based on height, weight, gender, and hematocrit. The minimum requirements to donate a double unit of red cells are below:

HeightWeightHematocrit
Male 5'1" 130 lbs 40% or higher
Female/Nonbinary 5'5" 150 lbs 40% or higher
Note that this may vary slightly per donation center depending on their equipment.
