It is the primary objective of blood suppliers to ensure that the blood supply remains safe for transfusion. While infectious disease testing is performed on all potential units collected, there are many required safety measures taken prior to the actual blood collection process to promote the collection of high quality products.
This course will take you through the requirements of the blood donor screening with the majority of the focus on the Donor History Questionnaire. While much of the process is designed to ensure the blood supply is safe for the population at large, it is also intended to make sure that it is safe for the donor as well.
Please note that this course has been designed (at the time of publication) around the most current version of the full Donor History Questionnaire, the DHQ v4.0, which was officially recognized by the FDA as of May 11, 2023.
Note: Frequent donors whose circumstances may not have changed significantly since their last donation may instead complete the abbreviated DHQ, or aDHQ, to avoid going through the full DHQ each time they donate.
