Despite efforts to form a consensus among physicians as to the screening guidelines for thyroid disease, expert panels have disagreed about TSH screening in the general population. According to Garber et al.:
- The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) recommends routine TSH measurement in older patients - age not specified - especially women.
- The American Thyroid Association (ATA) recommends the use of TSH in screening for thyroid disease in all adults beginning at age 35 years and every five years thereafter.
- The American Academy of Family Practitioners (AAFP) recommends routine screening in asymptomatic patients older than age 60 years.
- The American College of Physicians (ACP) recommends screening symptomatic women over the age of 50 years.
