Hyperthyroidism: Incidence and Risk

The prevalence of hyperthyroidism is far lower than hypothyroidism in the general population, with its estimated incidence at 0.3-0.6%. Similar to hypothyroidism, the preponderance is skewed heavily toward females.
At-risk population for hyperthyroidism:
  • Female-to-male ratio of 5:1
  • Over age 60
  • Other autoimmune disorders
