As time progresses, the band matures, and the nucleus develops constrictions, resulting in the formation of nuclear lobes. When nuclear lobes can be distinguished, the neutrophil is referred to as a segmented neutrophil.
In the image to the right, notice that the WBC in the upper right-hand corner has a segmented nucleus and is therefore considered a segmented neutrophil. The WBC in the center of the image is a band neutrophil.
