Categories of Albuminuria

Below are the definitions of albuminuria categories used to assess CKD in random (or spot) samples (Inker, 2014):
  • <30 mg/g - Normal/Mild Increase
  • 30 - 300 mg/g - Moderate Increase
  • >300 mg/g - Severe Increase
In the context of a 24-hour urine collection, the same criteria apply, replacing the units with mg/24h. It is important to note that these criteria are not definitive for any given "stage." Elevations must be confirmed more than once over three months to be considered truly elevated.
The spectrum of the observed disease varies continuously with the ratio; the higher the value (regardless of category), the worse the prognosis.
