Summary of Qualifications

The table below summarizes the qualifications for the four types of clinical laboratory personnel licenses.

Director
  • Physician certified in clinical pathology OR
  • Non-physician with:
    • Doctoral degree
    • Certification in a lab specialty
    • Continuing education in HIV/AIDS and medical errors
Supervisor
  • One of the following:
    • Doctoral degree + 1 year experience
    • Master's degree + 3 years experience
    • Bachelor's degree + 5 years experience
  • Licensed as a technologist or meets the requirements PLUS
  • Completed one of the following:
    • Certification as DLM(ASCP) or an appropriate ASCP specialty
    • 25 hours of CE in administration
  • Continuing education in HIV / AIDS and medical errors
Technologist
  • One of the following:
    • Bachelors degree + medical technologist training program OR 3 years experience
    • Associate degree in medical laboratory technology plus certification as MT(AAB)
    • Associate degree plus 5 years experience plus certification as MT(AAB)
    • Various other routes as specified by specialty
  • Completed exam by approved national certifying agency in one or more specialties
  • Continuing education in HIV / AIDS and medical errors
Technician
  • Meets one of the following:
    • Completed medical lab technology training program
    • High school or equivalency diploma + 5 years experience
    • Associate degree + 4 years experience
    • Various other routes as specified by specialty
  • Completed exam by approved national certifying agency
  • Continuing education in HIV / AIDS and medical errors
