Technologist Qualifications

All applicants for technologist in the specialties of Microbiology, Serology/Immunology, Clinical Chemistry, Hematology and Immunohematology must
  • Complete a Board approved course in medical errors
  • Complete a Board approved course on HIV/AIDS
  • Satisfy the requirements for High Complexity Testing according to CLIA Amendments, 42 CFR 493.1489
  • Pass a national certifying examination by an approved agency as specified by the Board
In addition, at least one of the following requirements must be met:
    1. Bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory, chemical or biological science AND:
      • Completion of a clinical laboratory training program OR
      • Three years of laboratory experience, at least one of which must be in the applied-for specialty
    2. Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology AND MT(AAB) certification
    3. Associate degree AND five years of laboratory experience, at least one of which must be in the applied-for specialty AND MT(AAB) certification
    4. Associate degree AND Completed a military clinical laboratory training program AND MT(AAB) certification
Applicants for the technologist level in other specific categories should consult the requirements in 64B3 as they vary from those mentioned above according to specialty.
