Distinguishing Yeast from Red Blood Cells

Yeast can be distinguished from RBCs in three ways.

  1. As was previously mentioned in the course, look for budding yeast forms.
  2. Correlate RBCs with a positive blood result on the urine reagent strip.
  3. The addition of acetic acid will lyse red cells but will not lyse yeast.
