This course will expose the reader to six case studies in pediatric hematology. These cases involve hematopathology prevalent from birth to the beginning of adulthood (age 18). Each case begins with the history of present illness or HPI. In a medical record, the HPI is a written account of what the patient told the physician during their visit in the office, hospital, or other setting. Laboratory professionals sometimes encounter HPI if they open the electronic medical record (EMR) to investigate a patient's chart in more depth.
Begin each case study by reading the HPI. This will provide insight as to why the patient scheduled an appointment with the physician. Next, review pertinent laboratory studies that have been ordered by the physician. Please note that the laboratory studies shown are those ultimately obtained after perhaps multiple visits to the physician. After a review of pertinent laboratory studies, the concept will be reviewed, and the patient’s case will be explained with a focus on physiologic concepts in hematology.
