Normal megakaryocytes measure approximately 20–90 µm in diameter and have a multilobed nucleus (refer to the image on the right).
Dysplastic megakaryocytes are:
- Micromegakaryocytes: smaller than 20 µm
- Hypolobated megakaryocytes: megakaryocytes with two attached lobes
- Monolobated megakaryocytes: megakaryocytes with a single lobe
- Megakaryocytes with separated nuclei: megakaryocytes with lobes completely separated
