Transfusion reactions may be associated more often with a particular blood product. For example,
- Acute hemolysis is generally associated with Red Cell transfusions. Non-immune hemolysis, as well as immune-mediated hemolysis, may occur with Red Cell transfusions.
- Transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI) and allergic reactions are more commonly seen in transfusions that contain larger amounts of plasma proteins.
- Platelets are the most common component implicated in posttransfusion sepsis due to the fact that platelet products are stored at room temperature (20–24°C).
