To be compliant:
- Updated (current) antimicrobial susceptibility breakpoints must be in use.
- Alternatively, the laboratory may choose not to report an out-of-date (considered erroneous) result.18
Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) documents are generally accepted and widely used among medical laboratories for the standardization of test methods and reporting of results.
Changes in antimicrobial susceptibility testing methods and reporting due to CLSI breakpoint reassignments may be verified or validated by the laboratory using the Breakpoint Implementation Toolkit (BIT).19,20 (More on this tool later in the course.)
In addition, CLSI "MICRO FREE" is a website with links to free, up-to-date versions of microbiology references M100, M23, M23S3.21
