How does the medical microbiology lab stay current?
The College of American Pathologists (CAP) laboratory survey checklist item MIC.11375 requires:
  • "Records showing that taxonomic changes were reviewed at least annually and incorporated by the laboratory in collaboration with prescribers, antimicrobial stewardship teams, and infection control committees, as appropriate."23
  • Not only must the medical microbiology laboratory remain current, but documentation records must be kept, as described above.
It is beneficial for the microbiology laboratory to have a policy and procedure on how to accomplish the tasks outlined in the checklist item.
The following pages describe recommended publications and interactive websites to assist in performing this task.
