Many medical microbiology laboratory workers around the United States have been experiencing a great deal of confusion, mystery, and perhaps even frustration over events of the past several years concerning the rapidly changing names of microorganisms. Even those working in other areas of the laboratory have probably noticed the associated revisions in laboratory accreditation checklists, discussions with clinicians, and statistical data reported from the facility. Supervisors and managers are particularly aware of these changes.
In this course, the importance of two main factors is discussed:
- Stay current by becoming educated about changes in taxonomy and nomenclature.
- Find common ground (mutual understanding) when communicating nomenclature and taxonomy with other healthcare professionals.
Why be concerned?
Because attention to this issue includes all of the following relevant, directly associated working parts of the medical laboratory, as well as many others that may be indirectly affected.
While many aspects of change may be good, concerns over and implications of change must be addressed. This module will explore current medical microbiology nomenclature changes and case presentations related to this topic. Ways to stay current and good communication strategies are also provided.
