Terminology

Certain terminology appears in the literature. These are not intended to be used interchangeably, but they are related and overlap in meaning.
Over the following pages, clarification is provided for the following terms:
  • Taxonomy
  • Classification
  • Nomenclature
Why is clarification important?
Understanding the recent changes and how to communicate using proper terminology and approved scientific style is important. Clarification applies to changes in the following:
  • Taxonomic classification of the microorganism (revision - moving microorganisms to another genus, species, family, order, or class)
  • Formal naming of the microorganism (using nomenclature or naming systems to rename)
The scientific writing style is discussed in the next section.
