Other stakeholders' usefulness in this process:
- Pharmacists (antimicrobial stewardship committees) and Infection Prevention and Control personnel (committee meetings) provide guidance and education on the clinical application of any nomenclature changes
- Anyone involved in creating the periodic antibiogram for the microbiology laboratory provides proper terminology and useful information via an accurate antibiogram tool used by the institution and its providers
- Any state or referral laboratory (or other institution) interfacing with the laboratory's LIS or information technology (IT) systems provides accurate and useful information for the greater good (tracking and reporting of infectious diseases)
A multidisciplinary approach is important, as all stakeholders work together (and not in silos). Remember, effective communication must take place for proper antimicrobial use and proper patient management to succeed.
These stakeholders may be notified in writing, or via the laboratory's assigned committee member. Alternatively, the Medical Director may inform all involved.
