General rules for fungi:
In addition to the general classification rules on the previous page:8,9
  • Use Valley fever - do not capitalize fever; do not use Valley Fever when referencing coccidioidomycosis
  • The same rule applies whenever disease-associated names are used.
Example:
  • Valley fever
  • coccidioidomycosis (lowercase when writing about the disease)
  • coccidioides (lowercase when writing about the general fungal infection)
  • Coccidioides immitis when referencing the genus and species
