Handling liquid nitrogen requires stringent safety measures and specialized personal protective equipment (PPE). Due to its extremely low temperature, direct contact with liquid nitrogen can cause severe frostbite and cryogenic burns.
Laboratory personnel should wear cryogenic gloves designed to provide insulation and protection against extreme cold. Gloves should be loose fitting in case they need to be removed if liquid nitrogen touches the skin. Face shields or safety goggles are essential to protect the eyes from splashes and vapors.
Additionally, general PPE, such as lab coats, long pants made of non-absorbent materials, and closed-toe shoes, should be worn to prevent liquid nitrogen from coming into contact with the skin.
