Prevotella

Significant Prevotella species include:
  • P. bivia
  • P. disiens
  • P. intermedia
  • P. menaninogenica
Things to remember:
  • Normally associated with oral, vaginal, and intestinal flora, but may cause infections associated with abscesses.
  • Aspiration pneumonia, lung abscesses, periodontal abscesses, and abscesses in many other locations (i.e., brain, sinus) may result.
  • P. melaninogenica is one of the most prevalent anaerobes in infected bite lesions.11
