Fusobacterium

Significant Fusobacterium species include:
  • F. mortiferum
  • F. necrophorum
  • F. nucleatum
  • F. varium
  • F. ulcerans
Things to remember:
  • Often found in mixed infections. Fusobacterium spp. may prove difficult to isolate. The Gram stain will help in cases of F. nucleatum as these bacteria may appear long and slender, with tapered ends.
  • Fusobacterium spp. infections are often associated with oral, pulmonary, and intracranial infections; they are frequently found in specimens from abscesses, such as obstetric, gynecologic, blood, and wounds.
