Diagnosis

Because the cardiac markers were normal, the possibility of a heart attack was ruled out.
A sputum culture was ordered based on the WBC results and patient symptoms. Also, because of the association of monocytosis with Tuberculosis (TB), tests for possible TB were ordered.
Both routine culture and TB smear turned out to be negative.
A CBC was ordered to be repeated in a few weeks.
The patient was diagnosed as having bronchitis and was treated with antibiotics. The chest pain was attributed to the patient's extreme anxiety. The monocytosis was determined to be due to a normal resolution of infection.
The repeat CBC three weeks later showed a normal neutrophil and monocyte count.
