Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSEs)

Prion diseases are also referred to as transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs). TSEs are characterized by microscopic vacuoles that resemble sponges when observed microscopically, hence the term "spongiform." An additional characteristic of TSEs is the deposition of amyloid (prion) in the brain.
