POCT has been integrated into the healthcare system to provide laboratory testing outside the main laboratory. As with any change in service delivery, there are advantages and disadvantages to the process, testing methods, and outcomes. Some benefits of POCT include:
- Efficiency: POCT uses an efficient workflow process. The testing is performed at the bedside or near the patient care location within the clinical management setting. The need for testing is determined at the bedside and implemented within a short time frame.
- Speed of diagnosis and treatment: Rapid test results can expedite medical decision-making. The POCT is conducted, and medical care can be promptly implemented. In addition to the rapid implementation of treatment, the process is more efficient for the physician, as there is no need to refamiliarize with the case after test results are returned from a central laboratory.
- Expanded testing capabilities: Laboratory testing can be provided at various sites within and outside the health care facility. Possible non-traditional testing locations or circumstances include but are not limited to, underserved populations, rural areas, and locations with limited infrastructure or personnel (e.g., disaster, accident, or military sites).
