Fungi can be grouped using various classifications. Clinically, they are grouped by where they infect the body:
- Superficial mycoses: Occurring in the outermost layers such as skin and hair.
- Cutaneous mycoses: Infecting the skin, nails and hair; they are also known as dermatomycosis.
- Subcutaneous mycoses: Involving the deep layers of skin and sometimes muscle.
- Systemic mycoses: Attacking the tissues and organ systems.
