The cytoplasm of the monocytes in this image (red arrows) is not as grainy as the cytoplasm that is typically associated with monocytes; however, the larger size, complex nuclear shape, fine chromatin pattern, and cytoplasmic vacuoles help to identify them as monocytes.
Lymphocytes (blue arrows) have more uniform nuclear shapes. The nuclei of lymphocytes may occasionally exhibit a small indent, but it is not as pronounced as nuclear clefting, which is characteristic of monocytes.
