Clinical laboratory personnel licenses are divided into four categories: director, supervisor, technologist, and technician. Each type has different roles, responsibilities, qualifications, and training. When you apply for a license, you must apply for one of these four categories.
All licensed clinical laboratory personnel are permitted to perform manual pretesting procedures and to collect, process, store, and ship specimens. These duties do not require a license. Section 64B3-2.003(17) of the Rules describes the responsibilities that can be performed by unlicensed personnel.
Clinical laboratory personnel qualified as directors (physicians, directors, or licensed directors), supervisors, technologists, or technicians can perform testing within the specialty(ies) they are licensed for. Each license may be valid for one or more specialties determined by education and training. Directors, supervisors, and technologists can interpret and report test results. Technicians may report results under the supervision of a director, supervisor, or technologist.
