The fourth concept in Emotional Intelligence (EI) is relationship management. Relationship Management can be seen as a culmination of self-awareness, self-management, and social awareness because it is through these three concepts that we can manage our relationships with others. As described by Daniel Goleman, relationship management involves six competencies:
- Developing others: sensing others' development needs and bolstering their abilities
- Inspirational leadership: inspiring and guiding individuals and groups
- Change catalyst: initiating or managing change
- Influence: wielding effective tactics for persuasion
- Conflict management: negotiating and resolving disagreements
- Teamwork and collaboration: working with others toward shared goals, creating group synergy in pursuing collective goals
Everyone can agree that relationships, inside and outside of work, can be complicated. Practicing relationship management, along with the other three EI concepts, will not happen overnight and requires focus and dedication.
Some ways in which to practice relationship management will be presented further in this course.
