Mindfulness has become a popular tool and practice in recent years among individuals and employers as a way to improve well-being.
Mindfulness, as defined by the Greater Good Science Center at UC Berkeley, "means maintaining a moment-by-moment awareness of our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and surrounding environment, through a gentle, nurturing lens. Mindfulness also involves acceptance, meaning that we pay attention to our thoughts and feelings without judging them...When we practice mindfulness, our thoughts tune into what we're sensing in the present moment..."
Based on this definition, it is easy to see how mindfulness can play a key role in developing our self-awareness and self-management. The simple act of stopping at any point during the day to evaluate how we are feeling is practicing mindfulness. Breathing exercises are a common tool for practicing mindfulness. The practice of mindfulness allows us to move into our wise minds and improve our resilience (how quickly we can recover from a stressful event).
